Island Trivia
A few lesser known facts about our favorite island (and its surrounds) that, over the years, we've gleaned through personal experience or learned while researching our photo captions.
Traditionally, when the FI ferry comes abreast of the Silver Eel Cove buoy, the captain gives a blast of the horn.
The Silver Eel Cove buoy doesn't collect data, but you can phone the nearby Ledge Light to hear its latest reading of Sound conditions: +1-888-701-8992 (station ID: LDLC3).

The New London Ledge Light was once rumored to have been haunted by a ghost named Ernie, an early lighthouse keeper who killed himself after a fight with his girlfriend.
Ernie was purportedly exorcised in 1981.

The marshmallows we use to make s'mores get their name from the marsh mallow plant. The mallow root has gelatin-like properties that make it effecive as a thickening agent.
Today, marshmallows are made with gelatin instead of mallow root.

Check out the center lines on some of the island's roads!
Many of them are marvelously wiggly and wonderfully wonky, like something out of a children's storybook. We could well imagine Harold - with a yellow, instead of a purple crayon - having been involved in laying them down.
Of unknown origin, the Dusty Miller ice cream sundae has become a Fishers Island tradition, most commonly consisting of: vanilla ice cream topped with marshmallow sauce, hot fudge and malted milk powder.
At Topper's, the local ice cream parlor, it's also known as The Maltese and has the added addition of a bone-shaped sugar cookie.
Fishers has been home to a brickworks and the Boroleum factory, among other enterprises.
Today, oysters are the island's only export. Family-owned Fishers Island Oyster Farm ships their sustainably-raised oysters to restaurants and directly to consumers.
